The secret to attain the 'Buddhi- Yoga'

Week 8, chapter 2- shlokas 52-65

Shloka 52 again makes me meditate more on the content. Just like a particular line of a song captures the attention and moves your soul…

“When you will give up attachment (moha) with your loved ones and this detachment seeps in your being…that is the moment when you attain the buddhi- yoga”. And as you attain the buddhi-yoga, this pure and deep self-knowledge will start flowing in your conscious and will make your heart free from all kinds of desires/ lusts (vasna)….in such a state, the desire to attain more knowledge or to reflect on previously acquired knowledge will no more be there. He continues to tell that the buddhi, which is corrupted by the sensory desires will attain calm and will enjoy the bliss of the union (yoga).

यदा ते मोहकलिलं बुद्धिर्व्यतितरिष्यति |
तदा गन्तासि निर्वेदं श्रोतव्यस्य श्रुतस्य च || 52||

yadā te moha-kalila buddhir vyatitarihyati
tadā gantāsi nirveda śhrotavyasya śhrutasya cha

Thus, Krishna tells the secret to attain the balance of the mana and the buddhi.

However, many people mistake this particular teaching of giving up ‘moha’/attachment with their loved ones by being dry towards them. I would rather remind here about the persona of Shri Krishna—the deliverer of this divine knowledge, that he himself has never been a dry person. Those who know his story know very well that he has been the most playful, charming, and also the most misunderstood Incarnation that Indian mythology has ever known.

P.S. The shloka satisfies my appetite for the time being. Starting from shloka 54, where Arjuna asks his next question— about the “sthit- pragya” state and Krishna explains this state of being, which every seeker desire to attain while walking on the path of yoga, I would attempt my notes/understanding in the next article.

Ananya Bhakti (the singularity)

Week 32, Chapter 11, Shloka 32-55 Tremendous form of Krishna, as seen by Arjuna shows everything and every one of the mortal world rushing towards the fire-filled mouth of Shri Krishna- like the moths rushing towards the fire are consumed by the fire, the same way Arjuna can see the warriors of the mortal world and the army of the battlefield rushing towards the tremendous fire of destruction in the mouth of Krishna. Having been witnessed this universal form, trembling with fear, Arjuna requests Krishna to return back to his gentle human form. Says Krishna— The universal form that you saw cannot be attained by studying Vedas or scriptures…nor by charity, penance, sacrifices can the universal form be attained. भक्त्या त्वनन्यया शक्य अहमेवंविधोऽर्जुन | ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परन्तप || 54 || bhaktyā tv ananyayā śhakya aham eva ṁ -vidho ’ rjuna j ñā tu ṁ dra ṣ h ṭ u ṁ cha tattvena prave ṣ h ṭ u ṁ cha parantapa The only way to attain my universal form is...

The universal being

Chapter 12, shloka 15-20 The way the ocean remains unaffected if the number of sea creatures increases or decreases nor is it annoyed by their activities…also the sea creatures remain unaffected by the roar of the ocean. In the same way, the one who is unaffected by other people’s behavior; has overcome the ideas of mine and others, has overcome the ideas of pleasure and sorrow, remains devoted to me and so is always the one who is most dear to me. He who has overcome his lust and greed, is a being so full of purity and his company is so auspicious like the rays of the sun –the mere presence is sufficient to remove all the darkness (that lies within). Such a being is fearless and is contained with ‘samadhaan’(the most peaceful state). The one who has assumed his position as a universal being is uninterested in anything other than the joy of the spirit. Does not rejoice nor despair the worldly gains or losses. The one who is equipoised in pleasure and sorrow and considers everyone e...

A Divine Revelation

    Week 13, chapter 4 shlokas 7- 20   Reveals Krishna- His divinity and the purpose of his incarnation. That, whenever the dharma is destroyed and immorality or unrighteousness prevails-- I incarnate (take form/manifest) to protect the dharma (righteousness). I incarnate to protect those who worship me and are righteous. I incarnate to swallow the darkness of ignorance, to destroy those who harm the righteous. I incarnate era to era to establish the dharma and to celebrate everything and everyone who are righteous. Those who know this are the ones who are enlightened. These are the ones who don’t dwell on past or future—are free of lust or attachments/ indulgences—who remain grateful for my incarnation and are contented by the sip of pure knowledge. They are the ones who are like walking forests of wish-granting trees—such enlightened souls are auspicious, and they are naturally bound to attain their oneness with me. (shloka 9-10) I love all those who worshi...
